U.S. DISCOVERY

U.S. Discovery is working to develop blood tests for the most common types of cancer.

Successful blood tests can aid in the critical early detection of malignancies.

Early detection of cancers is very important.  Tumors can often grow undetected in people for many years.  A small tumor less than a cubic centimeter in size can have negligible symptoms for many years.  Currently such a tumor in internal organs like lungs or pancreas may not be detected.  If such early stage tumors could be detected then the very lethal cancer stages could be avoided by early use of chemo- and other therapies.  When tumors are only detected at later stages they are very lethal because metastasis and mutation of tumor suppressor genes take place.  When tumor suppressor genes are mutated chemo- and other therapies are much less effective.  Metastasis which is often a later stage cancer event is the main reason why 90% of people die from cancer.

Blood tests to detect early stages of cancer can thus save and prolong many lives because therapies can be initiated when cancer stages are treatable and non-lethal.  Lung cancer, for example, kills 90% of people within five years largely because it is undetected at its early stages.

By examining cellular and tissue expression data U.S. Discovery has developed a list of about 200 serum / blood proteins which are potential cancer markers.  U.S. Discovery is now examining serum from normal humans and cancer patients to determine which of the 200 proteins are reliable cancer markers to be used in blood tests.  Western blots and serum purification strategies are used.

The founder of U.S. Discovery, Wayne Lemley, previously developed and sold a successful business in financial information and trading through telephones and internet.  He also has a PhD and has done graduate level research in lasers and optical electronics.

Successful business experience.  US Discovery / US Quotes provided a stock market trading and quote service over Touch-tone telephones and the internet.  Investors in the market could use a simple pushbutton telephone to call  the service, trade and request information by pushing buttons on their phone.  Investors would hear instructions and information through a computerized voice over their phone.  US Discovery had nearly 70 banks and brokerage firms as clients.  US Discovery answered an average of 70,000 calls each day through its network.

Clients included such firms as Citibank, Charles Schwab, Fidelity Investments, Chase Manhattan Bank, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, T Rowe Price, Fleet Bank, Bank of New York, Bank of Boston, Waterhouse Securities, and Quick & Reilly.  US Discovery people designed, built, and maintained computer and peripheral equipment in 40 locations across the USA. Our information technology experience was from chip level design through software in areas such as telephone voice response and internet.

Graduate academic background.  Wayne Lemley’s academic background includes research in far infrared lasers and optical electronics leading to a PhD at Brown University.  Sub-nanosecond high intensity far infrared gas laser pulses were developed and temporally measured by means of a Michaelson Interferometer.  His college background includes graduation with high honors in physics and math.
